White talks TV negotiations, Spike and cursing on Versus
Dana White has scratched and clawed for the last 10 years on behalf of his UFC, so he's ready to throwdown if need be during the negotiations for the promotion's next TV deal. White has definitely noticed Spike poking the UFC a little bit with some recent programming.
"Negotiating is never fun. And even though you're negotiating in good faith, you know, you're still giving some kicks to the balls here and there," White joked (1:40 mark).
During UFC on Versus 4 last Sunday, Spike ran a Nate Marquardt fight marathon against the live fight card. That's a little extra salt in the wound since Marquardt was dumped from the main event and fired the day before.
"I see Spike's side. That's what I would do too," White said candidly. "They might have [picked a fight with me]. We'll see. I would do the same thing they just did. I owe you one Spike."
The UFC and Spike have grown together over the last six years, but they may splitting soon. Rumors emerged last month in the Wall Street Journal that UFC officials were sitting down with folks from Comcast/NBC and that Spike could be looking at Bellator as backup plan for 2012.
"What everybody's saying, none of that stuff is true. People are out there speculating on what we're doing. We have no deal with anybody. We're out there talking with everybody. I don't buy into that stuff. When deals are done, everybody does what they're going to do and we'll see what happens." White said. He also pointed that the door isn't closed yet with Spike.
One other bit of television "news" discussed by White was the foul-mouthed Matt Mitrione. Fresh of his knockout win over Christian Morecraft, the emotional "Meathead" dropped a four-letter expletive on live television.
White said no action has been taken yet, but cussing on camera is a big no-no.
"He knew because I give these guys the riot act before, 'do not swear on free TV,' White said. The UFC president admits he's a virtuoso with four letter words, but there's a time and place. "I am good at doing it, but on live TV though. You gotta think and think before you speak. Calm down and think before you speak. But it's bad. It's real bad when you swear on live TV. they can't bleep it fast enough. First time it's ever happened."

Attonito takes decision, Lauzon gets quick sub at UFC on Versus 4
PITTSBURGH -- Like his beloved Red Sox on Sunday in Pittsburgh, Joe Lauzon was a big winner at UFC on Versus on Sunday night.
He showed off his striking abilities with a dominant display, knocking down Warburton with a straight right followed by a left. He then jumped on him top of him, and followed up with a perfect kimura to end the bout at 1:58 in the first round.
"We were working on not rushing things, keeping my balance and staying fundamentally sound. I hit pretty hard, but we had about five or six things we wanted to work in rotation. The first one I threw was the one that landed and put him away.� I'm always trying to hunt down submissions.� I never leave it to the judges," Lauzon said after the bout.
Attonito takes decision
Rich Attonito won a decision over Daniel Roberts in a bout that started strong but ended weakly. He won the bout with the odd judges' card of 29-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
Roberts started strong in the first round but slowed down considerably as the round wore on. At first he threw big, impressive kicks, but was taken down by Attonito by the end of the round. Roberts began with a takedown in the second and took Attonitio's back, but could not sink in a choke. Attonito reversed him and used the position to ground and pound, landing several big shots in the final seconds of the round.
Attonito grew aggressive in the third round, peppering Johnson with leg kicks and punches. The exhausted Roberts' only defense was to move away, but that was hardly effective. Attonito then knocked Roberts to the ground and followed up with an onslaught of punches. Roberts survived and got back to his feet, but was very wobbly. He staggered around the cage and threw strikes where he could while Attonito continued to throw intermittent strikes. Roberts tried for a takedown, but Attonito wanted to keep the fight on the ground. In the final seconds, Attonito took the fight to the ground, but was unable to do anything to put the bout in danger.

It's a Urijah Faber we've never seen before. The former WEC 145-pound king has always been more about touting his own game than talking about his opponent. Faber is enjoying the heat between the fighters.
"The reason it's a grudge match and all that, is you put Dominick and I in the same little neighborhood, we probably would've ended up fighting each other. [Because] of his bad attitude and me not taking crap, and being the badder dude. And that's what this all about. Like minded people, we're going to butt heads when it comes to the fight game and see who's boss," Faber said.
In spite of the victory four years, the Las Vegas sportsbooks have installed Cruz as a minus-140 favorite.

Brenneman halts Story?s rise with upset at UFC on Versus 4
It was an absolute no-win spot for Rick Story. The fast-rising welterweight was told about a new opponent yesterday when Nate Marquardt was dropped from UFC on Versus 4 and fired by the promotion. Charlie Brenneman, a little-known former college wrestler with just three UFC fights under his belt, was Johnny-on-the-spot, as stepped up to take the fight and stole a unanimous decision victory in Pittsburgh, 29-28 across the board.
This is a devastating loss for Story. A win over Marquardt would've gotten him in the mix for a title shot against Georges St. Pierre. Now Story (14-5, 6-2 UFC) goes back into the muddled picture at 170 pounds.
Brenneman deserves a ton of credit. He was already slated to fight on the card when T.J. Grant bailed from the event with an injury on Monday. It's likely Brenneman was told to stay in shape and be ready just in case something happened with Marquardt. Earlier in the day, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commisson revealed that the Marquardt issue arose as far back as six weeks ago.
Facing a wrestler is always a dangerous spot for a huge favorite. Takedowns and top control can steal minutes away from the more dangerous fighter. That's exactly what happened to Story, who entered the fight as a minus-500 favorite.
The change of style had to be an issue as well. In Marquardt, Story was facing a well-rounded fighter who was likely to bang it out on the feet. Brenneman, who wrestled at Lock Haven (Pa.), is still very much a one-trick pony in MMA. That trick was more than enough to throw Story off his game.
Brenneman got the fight to floor in the first when he landed a thudding right and tripped Story. Also a former college wrestler, Story look really uncomfortable on his back. He did nothing but hold on, to try and force a stand up. It never happened. The fight stayed on the floor for the remaining three minutes.
Seven seconds into the second, Brenneman again scored a takedown. He landed another one with 3:10 left in the round. Story tried some submissions, but never got back to his feet. In the third. it was more of the same but Story threatened with some more dangerous submission. He also turned a scramble into the mount position with 1:18 left, but there wasn't enough to inflict any damage.

Sotiropoulos interview: It?s time to put an end to 155 contenders losing big fights
After Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard finally meet for a third time, it's anyone's guess who'll be standing next in the line for a title shot in the UFC's lightweight division.
It's seems like each time someone is on the verge of locking up No. 1 contender status they flop in their next fight. It just happened to Anthony Pettis at "The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale," and George Sotiropoulos felt that same sting against Denis Siver back at UFC 127.
Sotiropoulos (14-3, 7-1 UFC) is back this weekend and isn't too down about his loss to Siver. He wasn't blown out in the fight, plus the UFC is also very high on Siver's game. Aussie knows he can get right in line behind the champ and challenger with a few good performances.
"The contenders ... it's a big mess in there right now," Sotiropoulos told RawVegas.tv. "The guys who are up there, a lot of us, have lost recently. I think a lot of us are still up there, but it's just changed the timing of everything."
Sotiropoulous admitted he just wasn't on his game that night.
"It's never the same. You always want to be at a certain point. I've always noticed something is always a little different in every fight, whether it's good or bad," Sotiropoulos said. "You've gotta roll through it, and move through it and press on regardless."
Sotiropoulos may have been a little off because of the short time between his fight at UFC 127 and his previous tilt as UFC 123, just 13 weeks earlier.
The challenges this time around is game planning for an opponent change. Sotiropoulos is facing Rafael dos Anjos (14-5, 3-3 UFC), who replaced Evan Dunham in early May. Both are good grapplers, but Dunham is a guy who works behind a nice jab while dos Anjos throws his punches like a wild man.
Sotiropoulos is a minus-270 favorite over the Brazilian.

Picture gets a little more clear on where Marquardt screwed up
In an effort to clear up his suspension by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission and firing by the UFC, Nate Marquardt spoke to one media outlet on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that still left plenty of unanswered questions.
Larry Pepe from PROMMARadio, a media member very familiar with the issue of PED's from his experience in the world of bodybuilding, joined ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas to discuss the issues he had with Marquardt's story.
According to Marquardt and is manager Lex McMahon, he was allowed to fight at UFC 128 in New Jersey even though he was in the midst of actually getting the therapeutic use exemption necessary for approved use of testosterone replacement therapy. The New Jersey State Athletic Commission Board allowed Marquardt to fight with the understanding that he would be tested before and after his fight against Dan Miller. That included going off TRT for eight weeks after the fight to find out if his normal testosterone levels warranted TRT use.
NJSACB legal counsel Nick Lembo said Marquardt went through the process and was officially denied the exemption last week and the news was delivered to the PSAC, last Friday, the day before the UFC on Versus 4 weigh-in. Why was he denied? That seems odd because Lembo also said the postfight testing actually justified Marquardt's use of TRT. So what went wrong?
MMAjunkie indicates that the hang up came with Camp Marquardt's choice of doctor.
All [tests] came back within the acceptable range per the NJSACB's guidelines on exemptions. When he sought to return to the therapy, however, he did so with his personal doctor, who is not an endocrinologist.
[...] Lex McMahon, Marquardt's manager, said the NJSACB had previously raised concerns about the treatment Marquardt was receiving.
"The commission sent a very clear statement that the doctor he was using had been incomplete, (and he) was using protocols that were not approved by the [U.S. Anti-Doping Agency]," McMahon said. "At that point in time, that should have been a significant indicator to go see a specialist, (and) to go see someone whose core competency was this.
"So I think that's another area where Nate and our team have to take responsibility."
So it sounds like this is far from a malicious act. Now will that be enough for Marquardt to gain forgiveness from the UFC? Only time will tell.

Story looks to keep rampage through welterweight division going at UFC on Versus 4
Rick Story is talking some lofty goals.
Who would've picked the 170-pounder out of Washington to post back-to-back wins over Thiago Alves and Nate Marquardt? He's already accomplished one half of the task and jumped at the opportunity to take on Marquardt, a former title contender at middleweight.
Story, who took the fight on just 24 days notice, likes his chances.
"I don't go into any fight thinking I'm not going to win. I go in knowing I'm going to win in every single fight," Story told ProMMARadio.
A former college wrestler at Southern Oregon, Story now looks to finish things with his hands.
"I want it to end by knockout. That's the ultimate," Story said. "I think it'll depend on how good of shape Marquardt is in after this weight cut. If he fades, I'm going to TKO him. Probably late 2nd or third round."
Story (13-3, 6-1 UFC) believes a spectacular win over a big name like Marquardt should get him a crack at the belt. That's big talk from a guy who actually lost his UFC debut a little over two years ago.
"I think that the win over Marquardt by finish should put me in position for a title shot. I think a lot of people would agree with me," Story said. "Finishing Marquardt, a former top contender at 185 pounds, a higher weight class, should move me into that spot."
That spot is inhabited by Georges St-Pierre, one of the world's top two fighters in MMA. That would be a heckuva leap for a guy who was recently ranked No. 23 in the world at 170. Seems unlikely, but so did this recent run of six straight wins. Story believes it can it happen, maybe it's time the rest do as well.

Pat Barry 2.0 looks to seize opportunity against Cheick Kongo
PITTSBURGH -- You don't need to point out Pat Barry's weaknesses as a fighter to him. He's well aware of his reputation as a striker with no ground game.
"The three things that Pat Barry needs more than anything else is heavyweight training partners, jiu-jitsu and wrestling. The whole world knows that, like I'm allergic to the ground or something," Barry said.
Even the UFC's video game reflected his problems with grappling.
"Whoever made the video game, as soon as my character falls down, he dies. Even if I just lay down on my back, he dies."
But to learn the ground game and give him an edge in his UFC on Versus 4 bout with Cheick Kongo, he had to find other heavyweights who knew the ground game inside and out. He found that at Death Clutch, the Minnesota-based training home of Brock Lesnar that is run by former University of Minnesota wrestling coach Marty Morgan. Barry first went to Death Clutch to work with Lesnar on striking and was asked to stay. Now, he works with Lesnar, Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad (pictured), and Chris Tuchsurer, among other big guys.
"If anything, I think Marty Morgan saw my work ethic, saw that I always work hard, I don't complain -- I complain a little bit, but ignore my complaining -- he saw that I learn fast, and being a student of the game, it's hard for him to see someone struggle and ignore it. He's like superman. He saw it and came to the rescue."
Under Morgan's tutelage, Barry said that his game has evolved to keep up with the ever-changing and growing sport.
"What I was doing in my mind was enough, but apparently there is never enough, especially with the way the sport is evolving. You've got wrestlers coming and knocking people unconscious. You have strikers who take people to the ground and beat them up. It never stops."
Like Barry, Kongo has a background in kickboxing, but has added a nasty component of ground and pound to his arsenal in recent bouts. Sunday night, Barry will finally get the bout that he has been asking for since signing with the UFC.
"This is the fight I've been asking for ever since I've gotten in the UFC. It's the opportunity I was waiting for. He's a heavyweight striker, and he was known as one of the most deadly heavyweight strikers in the UFC. I never brag, I don't have the most killer ego, but I couldn't take hearing that. I want to be known as the guy to watch out for."

"Gina is feeling much better after having undergone some medical attention and is looking forward to getting back into training very soon. She would like to express thanks to Team Jackson for a wonderful training camp, Strikeforce and the fans," said Coker, reading from a text message he received from Carano's management team.
Beyond that the boss didn't have any details.
"She evidently had some medical attention provided and she looks forward to getting back soon. So that's everything I know," said Carano.
Coker couldn't even answer if the medical issue was career threatening, saying the text was all he's seen.
The situation with Strikeforce's No. 1 female star is just as unclear, or is it?
Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos is currently without a contract.
"Absolutely. I'm pretty sad not to be fighting and I'm trying to renegotiate my contract for a year, but Strikeforce doesn't want to made a deal, they want to keep paying me what they paid before, but now I'm the event's champion and I've never been defeated in Strikeforce. I just wanted to be recognized," Cyborg said.
She also told Tatame that she has taken an August fight in Brazil and just has to wait until her Strikeforce contract runs out this month.
One has to wonder if this is the end of the line for Cyborg in Strikeforce. If Dana White has zero interest in female fighting in the UFC, why would he allow a company that he owns to lock itself into any more long-term contracts with female fighters?

The opportunity was granted him to fight fellow veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in March 2011, but a bad cut suffered in training caused him to withdraw. Instead of facing a fellow warhorse of a similar age, Ortiz was thrust into a UFC 132 match with Ryan Bader, a highly regarded 28-year-old who lost for the first time earlier this year.
While the three UFC building blocks all won championships and were dominant at one time, the late stages of their careers were remarkably different. For Liddell, it was his once-iron chin betraying him in ugly knockout losses to Quinton Jackson, Rashad Evans, Mauricio Rua and Rich Franklin that signaled to UFC brass it was time to persuade him to hang up his Hall of Fame gloves. Couture walked away before anyone tried to force him out. Still competitive at the age of 47, Couture had won three fights in a row before announcing that win or lose, his UFC 129 bout against Lyoto Machida would be his swan song. He lost via TKO.
Ortiz is somewhere in between. He is good enough to be competitive, yet winning has eluded his reach.
If Saturday is the end, it's been a long, slow goodbye. He was 31 years old when he last won a fight, an age hardly considered ancient in MMA. Over those five fights, he hasn't ever truly been blown out. He lost via TKO to Liddell back in Dec. 2006 when Liddell was the king of the world, but he never lost consciousness, he was simply overwhelmed by Liddell's aggressiveness and power. That became the first of four straight matches against once or future champions. He fought to a draw with Rashad Evans, lost a unanimous decision to Lyoto Machida, and lost a split decision to Forrest Griffin. Then, last October, he fell once again, this time losing a decision to a decidedly less accomplished fighter, his former protege Matt Hamill.
He's now 36. During the intervening years, Ortiz was slowed down by neck and back injuries that robbed him of the explosiveness that made his double-leg takedown one of the signature moves of early UFC fights in the Zuffa era. Despite his own self-promotion and constant proclamations that he's healthy, when it comes time to fight, Ortiz has been a gunslinger without his favorite weapon.
The trouble with proclaiming his career over, which many have, is that his skills haven't significantly deteriorated; they're simply not as sharp. He's like a once-great but aging running back who can anticipate the hole in the line of scrimmage but can't get to it as quickly as he used to. He's like a fireball pitcher who lost a few miles per hour on his fastball. He knows what he's doing, he's got skills and smarts to stay competitive, but when it becomes a game of reaction and speed, he can't make up the time. Whether that's because of the physical issues that have mounted over the years, or simply the grind of the sport speeding up his clock, Ortiz is simply not the same athlete he once was, and that doesn't make him any different than most 36-year-olds. But when you're trying to compete with kids, the loss of a split-second in reaction time or explosion is often the difference between victory and defeat.
To keep his job, he must win Saturday night. A loss will be the end of his UFC career, one that has spanned over 14 years. Aside from a single 16-second fight that occurred outside of the UFC's Octagon, Ortiz has spent his entire pro run with the promotion. His bout with Bader will mark his 24th fight in the UFC, tying Couture and Matt Hughes for the most all-time. If you're wondering, Liddell is just one behind them with 23.
You can say that Ortiz is part of a dying breed, but in reality, he's the very last one. Vitor Belfort was in the UFC before Ortiz, but he never had the mainstream impact Ortiz could boast, and Hughes came after Zuffa bought the company.
He was at times a lightning rod, a box-office phenom, a Dana White punching bag, and a one-man soap opera. Now, he's a rarity in sports: a high-paid underdog story. But whatever he was, people always cared. And whatever he will be after Saturday, whether he lives to fight another day or is cut and calls it quits, there is one other thing he can say he was: for a moment in time, Ortiz was the best.
Thirty-six is not old, but it's not so young, either. Chuck and Randy are gone, and now it appears time is coming for Tito, too. Memories of the past and a history of importance to the UFC can no longer save him. On Saturday, it's win or go home. If he loses, remarkably, that would mean that the UFC's big three were gone within six months of each other. It would be an ending that is equally fitting and sad, the early power trio going out like dominos in a poetic goodbye.

Slimmed down Morecraft ready for Mitrione at UFC on Versus 4
PITTSBURGH -- A tiny Christian Morecraft will be in the cage to fight Matt Mitrione on Sunday night. Well, as tiny as you can get at 6-foot-6 and 265+ lbs.
At the UFC on Versus open workouts on Friday, a sleeker Morecraft answered questions about his slimmed-down frame.
"Right now, I'm over 265. I've been doing a lot of strength training. You know all the madness that goes into this. I used to be a 360-lb. man a few years ago. I'm just morphing into this. I'm feeling more powerful and more explosive and just amped."
Morecraft's known more for his ground game, but said that he has focused on his stand-up. That should come in handy against a hard hitter like Mitrione.
"Obviously, in this sport, we work on all different aspects of our game. I've really been working on my striking and counterstriking," Morecraft said. "I was dominating my first fight with Stefan Struve, and my stand-up wasn't as close to what it is now. I couldn't wait to work on that divot in my game. Can't wait to unleash it on Sunday."
In his UFC debut against Struve, Morecraft won the first round before getting knocked out in the second.
Morecraft wants a win to continue to move up in the UFC heavyweight division, continuing, as he put it, "The Live It Love It Tour," but he has a little more motivation to fight Mitrione, a fighter who is known to get under his opponents' skins.
"I've said a lot of stuff like I don't like Matt. Obviously, I respect him. Ever since I saw him on 'The Ultimate Fighter,' I just always wanted to fight him."
He doesn't take Mitrione's trash talk too seriously, though.
"That stuff's always fun. People love it, and it keeps us around. It's almost like adding in a little entertainment into the game."

Howard has ?called? Fight of the Night on Sunday night
PITTSBURGH -- If the other fighters on UFC on Versus 4 have plans for the Fight of the Night bonus, they should think again, according to John Howard. He and Matt Brown have the FOTN locked up.
"Matt Brown's really tough. He's got a chin and he comes out banging. He's going to bang with me and not lay and pray. Win or lose, we both get fight of the night. I called it," Howard said.
Like Brown, Howard is on a losing streak. He was TKOed by Jake Ellenberger in August and then dropped a decision to Thiago Alves in December. Both fighters are also known to be sluggers.
"It's going to be a good fight to watch. He's an awesome striker, I'm an awesome striker."
But beyond the fight with Brown, Howard has one fighter in his crosshairs: Anthony Johnson. "Rumble" and Howard have been trashtalking each other for months over two canceled fights.
"I cannot stand that kid. I do not like that kid. He doesn't like me. It's hard to be in the same room as him. I saw him yesterday in the media room, and it was hard not to start something with him. That kid has serious problems. Hopefully, we can fight in the UFC, but if not, there's going to be a streetfight. We have a score to settle for sure."
In their talk, Howard said that Johnson crossed a line.
"He called me a cotton picker. I took that personally. You don't go that far. That's personal."
Before he can get his hands on Johnson, Howard has to get through Brown.
"I'm a professional. At the end of the day, I do have to fight for a living. Look past that, and know that I've got to deal with it later. Good things come to those who wait."

One Year Since Last Fight, Cris Cyborg Plots Next Move, With Bout Likely in August

Last Sunday was an anniversary that Cris "Cyborg" Santos would rather have not reached, and certainly did not celebrate. June 26 marked one year since her last fight, a year in her athletic prime given away to opponent issues, contract negotiations and promoter changeover.In August 2009, Cyborg and Gina Carano became the first women to headline a major MMA event. It was a spectacularly successful promotion, averaging 576,000 viewers and setting a new MMA ratings record for Showtime. The women had the center spotlight and delivered. The broadcast peaked with over 850,000 viewers tuning in to watch Cyborg and Carano battle. Santos won via first-round TKO to become Strikeforce's first middleweight champion. For a woman who was rapidly becoming MMA's queen, it was a crowning moment. Afterward, she defended the belt twice, knocking out Marloes Coenen and Jan Finney.
And then, it was like she disappeared.
It's been a year since. On Tuesday, CagePotato.com reported that Cyborg is now a free agent. When reached by MMA Fighting, Cyborg's camp declined any comment on her contract status. Sources with knowledge of the situation, however, say that in fact, June 26 was the deadline to finalize a new deal, and the date came and went with little dialogue.
Before time ever ran out on her deal though, Cyborg (10-1) was looking at other options. Cyborg's contract was exclusive to the U.S., giving her the opportunity to scour for fights elsewhere around the world. A source with knowledge of the situation told MMA Fighting that a previously rumored August 6 fight in Brazil has been "green-lit" and that though her opponent has not been finalized, she is contracted to compete at the event and is currently in the midst of training camp.
Despite that, it is Cyborg's hope to reach a new deal with Strikeforce. According to two sources, the sides were close to a new agreement late last year before the promotion was purchased by Zuffa. After the Zuffa-Strikeforce sale went through, negotiations stalled for a time due to issues related to the acquisition before recently beginning anew. Talks have gone slowly since, though there is still the possibility of a return to the fold.
Even though the year-benchmark has come and gone, the two sides continue to communicate in hopes of extending the relationship. Until then, Cyborg stays busy. She continues on the seminar circuit, helping her husband -- fighter Evangelista Santos -- rehabilitate from a recent shoulder injury, and training for her August bout. Other promotions are likely to begin bidding for her talents as well. Her Strikeforce career and the championship belt remain in limbo.
She's been dominant since arriving on the international scene, but now she's just looking for a steady place to work. Two years ago, Strikeforce boasted arguably the only two female stars in MMA: Cyborg and Carano. With Carano on an indefinite leave and Cyborg still unsigned, those valuable pieces have slipped away. Cyborg still wants in to the new Strikeforce, but whether the two sides can strike a deal is anybody's guess.
Asked for a gut reaction on whether the two would find common ground and reach a mutually beneficial agreement, a source close to the action paused before letting out a big sigh.
"To be honest, I just don't see it happening," the source said.

UFC’s behind-the-scenes guru gets chance meeting with Obama
PITTSBURGH -- Burt Watson (pictured in the background), the man who you've seen directing traffic at weigh-ins, works tirelessly to keep things running well at UFC events, and he was rewarded with a chance meeting in Pittsburgh. The UFC's main behind-the-scenes man met President Obama while both were at the fighters' hotel, and told his tale to Cagewriter.
The Hyatt Regency in Pittsburgh hosted both the fighters and the president, who was in town to make a speech at Carnegie-Mellon University. Because of Obama's presence, security was tight around the hotel. Watson's room was near the fitness center, so his room had to be checked by Secret Service before the president could go in and do his daily workout. Watson's room was swept by bomb-sniffing dogs and Secret Service agents.
After the sweep, Watson had to turn on the sauna to ready it for fighters. When he entered the fitness center, he saw the president, and asked if he could go in.
"I opened the door, and there was President Obama, pedaling on a bike and reading the newspaper," Watson said. "I started shaking a little bit. There was no one else in the room."
Because of his job with the UFC, Watson has met a who's who of celebrities, but was still blown away by getting to meet Obama.
"I don't get starstruck, because I work with celebrities all the time. It's not my job to get starstruck, but I was dumbfounded. I walked towards him, reached out my hand and said, 'What's up?' He said, 'How are you?' I said, 'Right now? I'm honored.' And he said, 'Nah, I'm honored.' And as I walked out, I thought, 'Oh [expetive]! Did I just walk out of the room with the president of the United States? Me and him!"
He said that the enormity of the situation didn't really hit him until later.
"Not until I walked out of there did it hit me that I was literally one-on-one with the most powerful man in the world. History has a way of making you a part of it without even asking. Never in my wildest, wildest dreams did I imagine that I would meet the President of the United States."
Watson's calm, upbeat demeanor serves him well in his job as the behind-the-scenes man for the UFC. Working for the promotion since UFC 31, he has seen nearly everything the fight world can muster and has taken it in stride. This was different.
"For the first time, I was in awe."

Carwin took a beating, doesn’t remember much of UFC 131
Shane Carwin confirmed what most us already knew. In a one-sided beatdown, he ate a lot of punches from Junior dos Santos at UFC 131.The scary part is Carwin says he doesn't recall parts of the fight.
"I have had a lot of time to reflect on the fight, and while I have not seen it and due to the damage I incurred, I can't recall much of the fight. What I do know is this I am a guy learning how to fight at the elite level," Carwin wrote on his blog. "My heart can't be questioned, I think I showed that I have the cardio to fight at this level and I just need to work on my technique."
Carwin said he knew he was in trouble early in the fight.
"As the fight started, I just did not feel like myself," Carwin said. "I wasn't able to get my feet moving and Junior capitalized quickly. As he was pummeling me I kept trying to find a way to defend myself so [referee Herb Dean] would not stop the fight. Junior was landing solid shots and that is where probably he broke my nose."
Carwin did all he could to make it through the final round and take the fight to a decision.
"After the second round I knew I was in trouble. My nose made it impossible to breathe, my eyes were full of blood and Junior was still coming at me."
