CW interview: Manhoef relishing the pressure for Strikeforce

In fighting Tim Kennedy at Strikeforce next weekend, Melvin Manhoef knows that in coming off of two losses, he has to win. At the same time, he sees value in having lost to Tatsuya Mizuno and Robbie Lawler in his last two bouts.

"I have a few losses. I have to win this fight. I'm going to do everything in my power to do that. It's sometimes good to have losses. You learn something from the losses," Manhoef told Cagewriter.

"I learned a lot about who my fans are. If you're at a point when you're winning, everyone tells you to keep going.  But when you lose, you have to keep going, too. If you don't have losses, you'll never have wins, either."

With just four weeks notice on the bout, Manhoef has spent time working on conditioning and hasn't had time to read what his opponent is saying about their fight.

"Honestly? I don't read anything. I don't see anything. I don't read the internet or anything. I'm not busy with that. I'm busy with training. But what did he say? You can tell me."

I responded that Kennedy said he will knock you out in the first round, and asked if he would like to respond to that.

"My response? What? (laughs.) Yeah, yeah, yeah. Everybody has fantastic dreams and everything. He can dream what he wants."

Though Manhoef has just fought once in the United States -- the loss to Lawler -- he can't wait to get back to America for this bout.

America: where dreams come true

"It's different than fighting in Japan or Holland. In America, I like it. The interviews and all the things around it. They put attention on the fighters and they really appreciate the fighters in America. They say in America that all dreams come true, so I hope my dreams will come true there. "

He's still somewhat of an unknown entity to American MMA fans, so they may not know of his K-1 kickboxing background, or how he is talented at bringing violence to the cage. They may even be surprised when they see him walk out to the cage wearing a dog collar. He says it's all part of the ritual to get him in fight mode.

"It's like a thing that's inside me. In my mind, when I see my opponent and we are in the Octagon, it's like the old days. Like the gladiators. I want to win. It takes over everything and I really want to hurt people at that moment. That is how the dog collar comes in," Manhoef said.

"When the dog collar goes off, I feel unleashed. I feel like I have to go. I have to do what I want to do, and I want to fight. It's like I'm a wild beast. I'm like an animal."

Fitch no longer focused on title shot, just task in front of him

Jon Fitch took a beating and finished the fight against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 87, but ever since, he's yearned for a second chance. The rematch against GSP hasn't come to fruition, so Fitch (on the right) has come to grips with the fact that he can't control what happens with the UFC welterweight picture. He needs to focus simply on winning and doing so in impressive fashion.

B.J. Penn is up next for Fitch, who says he's blocked everything out of his life.

"Even thinking that I'm entitled for some reason to be fighting bigger fights or that I should be getting more respect or hell just thinking about someone taking my parking spot," Fitch told Neil Davidson from the Canadian Press. "Any little distraction, any little thought that's not focused on where it needs to be I think is just a deadweight."

Fitch is 13-1 in the UFC, has won five straight and is ranked No. 2 in the world at 170 by the USA Today/Bloody Elbow top 25 welterweight rankings, but the former Purdue wrestler knows he's got no shot of getting GSP if he can't take out Penn at UFC 127.

"I think in the past maybe I've thought about too many things other than just the fight right in front of me. And maybe that's part of the reason why I haven't finished the last few fights, so that's another reason why I haven't really thought of anything other than just fighting B.J."

Fitch said he's trimmed down a bit to battle the smaller Penn. Penn was the UFC's lightweight champ until two straight losses against the current belt holder Frank Edgar. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter has also put in extra work to defend against Penn's jiu-jitsu game.

"I brought in one of (coach) Dave Camarillo's black belts from Modesto to help with some of the jiu-jitsu and I've put out some bounties for, submissions, too. The last couple of weeks, I've been offering guys $20, $25 a submission, if they're able to submit me. I've been able to avoid any payments thus far," Fitch said dryly.

The welterweight title picture gets very interesting if St. Pierre beats Jake Shields at UFC 129 in April. The plan is for GSP to move to middleweight, vacate his 170-pound title and challenge Anderson Silva. That means Fitch would have to be choice No. 1 to battle another contender for the vacant belt. Who that'll be, is anyone's guess. Martin Kampmann and Diego Sanchez fight next week at UFC on Versus 3. Carlos Condit has been on a hot streak, plus Koscheck and Shields are right there as well.

Fitch may not get GSP again, but the belt could be there for the taking before the end of 2011.

Dana White smashes Fedor lovers on Twitter following the Russian's loss

With plenty of longtime mixed martial arts fans on the emotional edge following the beatdown of Fedor Emelianenko, there was one man who was fired up to see the Russian go down in flames. Minutes after Fedor fell badly at the hands of Antonio Silva, Dana White hit Twitter, posted a smiley face and then opened up the blowtorch.

Longtime Fedor backers and fans of PRIDE were bent and White stirred the pot. He threw out barbs like "M-Done" for M-1 and "VaDummy" for Vadim Finkelchtein, Fedor's manager.

Responding via Twitter, M-1's Evgeni Kogan didn't enjoy the shots.

The UFC president was personally vested in this one. He'd tried to sign the Russian fighter on numerous occasions, but couldn't come to an agreement with M-1, his management team. There was probably a small part of him reveling in the fact that Showtime's big signee had lost again. White often references the lack of respect he received from networks when he was building his MMA empire. Fedor shocked the fight world by rejecting the UFC's overtures to sign not once, but twice with Strikeforce. Emelianenko is now 1-2 fighting on Showtime/CBS.

White battled with readers for roughly two hours following the Showtime fight card and signed off by thanking the fans being so passionate. He was back on Sunday ready to further debate. Fans responded by coming up with new Twitter handles likes @UFC_HWs_Suck and @ForeverPRIDEFC.

Strikeforce heavyweight GP: Fedor loses again, talks of quitting the sport

The end of an era officially arrived tonight in New Jersey. Fedor Emelianenko dominated the sport's landscape from 2001-2006, but age, lack of size and an ever-evolving heavyweight field has caught up to him.

Fedor couldn't overcome the massive Antonio "Big Foot" Silva and lost via TKO on a doctor's stoppage at the end of two rounds. Silva had Fedor mounted for most of the second round. His repeated blows closed Fedor's right eye. The ringside doctor and referee Dan Miragliotta stopped the fight before the third began.

The melancholy crowd in New Jersey's Izod Center was further shocked when a sullen Fedor (31-3) talked about walking away from the sport.

"Yes, maybe it's the last time. Maybe it's high time," Fedor said through his translator. "Thanks god for everything.I spent a great, beautiful, long, sport life. Maybe it's God's will."

Emelianenko, was arguably the world's No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter from 2001-2008. He had a 10-year unbeaten streak, that lasted from 2001-2009, snapped last year by Fabricio Werdum. That loss was chalked up by many as a fluke. Fedor got caught in a pretty elementary armbar.

This was the first fight back in the cage for the Russian since that loss in June of 2009. He had prolonged negotiations about a contract entension and his inclusion in the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix. Fedor was placed on the same side of the bracket as Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem. It was an odd alignment since those two fighters were thought to be the No. 1 and 2 seeds. Now we see why. Anything can happen in MMA.

Silva (16-2) is a respected heavyweight, but was still very underestimated entering the fight. You can't discount how huge the Brazilian is at 6-foot-4, 264 pounds. Showtime announcer Mauro Ranallo claimed Silva was 285 at fight time. That's a 55-pound weight advantage over Fedor, who's a smallish heavyweight at 230.

Silva and Fedor put on a great show. They slugged it out in the first. Two of the three judges gave the round to Emelianenko, but the Russian came out for the second with little strategy in mind.

Just three seconds in, he hurled a big right hand at Silva, who ducked and scored an easy double-leg takedown. The 55-pound weight gap may not kill you standing, but it's brutal on the ground. Silva, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, is also skilled with his positioning. A minute later, Silva passed Fedor's half guard to side control and then mounted the Russian thirty seconds after that.

Fedor rotated between his back and his stomach four different times. On his back, he was pummeled by Silva's humongous fists. On his stomach, his risked getting caught in a rear-naked choke. That was a lot of work over two minutes. Once Fedor settled on his back again, Silva worked and then latched on an arm-triangle choke. Fedor's head turned purple but he survived and Silva got tired. Fedor finally got out of the mount when Silva attempted a knee bar. The round ended with Fedor trying his own heel hook. Silva knew what he was doing, smiled and waved his finger at Fedor.  When the Russian rose to his feet, it was clear that right eye was nearly swollen shut. It had the look of broken orbital bone or maybe he'd take a thumb to the eye.

When the fighters hit their stools, Miragliotta walked to Fedor's corner and quickly called a halt to the fight. Confusion reigned for 30 seconds before Silva's corner was finally informed of the win.

Fedor has his chances in the first round. He stalked the big Brazilian trying to land a right-changing right hand, but he didn't set up the punches with a jab. Emelianenko actually got top control on the ground when Silva fell out of a standing guillotine attempt. In the past, Fedor on top, meant doom for most fighters. In 2011, the top-level big heavyweights are pretty solid off their backs. Fedor had trouble landing anything significant and tried for a kimura, but Silva wisely rolled out of it.

Emelianenko took heavy damage. Silva landed 51-of-81 shots on the ground and 72-of-128 overall. Fedor landed 36-of-53.

Pearson takes decision over Fisher at UFC 127

"The Ultimate Fighter" winner Ross Pearson rebounded from a loss to Cole Miller by winning a unanimous decision over veteran lightweight Spencer Fisher at UFC 127 in Australia. The judges saw it 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 for Pearson.

Fisher started strong, bouncing around as he pushed forward on his feet and slamming Pearson to the ground. Pearson responded with an armbar attempt, but Fisher was able to shake him off, and the two returned to their feet where Fisher continued to stay aggressive for the remainder of the round.

In the second, the two traded back and forth, with Pearson growing stronger as the round went on. Fisher had good striking early on, but was slowed when Pearson tried for a takedown. That didn't work, but Pearson landed cleaner punches afterwards.

Between rounds, the two showed that they were still fresh as they bounced around, raising their arms and drawing cheers from the Australian crowd. Pearson started the third with a takedown, but Fisher didn't stay down long. Pearson continued to land strikes and hold off Fisher. Pearson caught a kick and used that to take Fisher down. He ended the round with a bevy of strikes and elbows but wasn't able to end the bout before the final horn sounded.

Pearson is now 4-1 in the Octagon, 12-4 overall while Fisher, a mainstay of the UFC lightweight division since 2005, falls to 24-7.

UFC 127: Michael Bisping Beats Jorge Rivera

by Michael David SmithMichael Bisping punches Jorge Rivera at UFC 127.Michael Bisping showed off an impressive, well-rounded offensive arsenal against Jorge Rivera at UFC 127, using a combination of takedowns and punches to win a second-round technical knockout.

The fight was the culmination of a rivalry between Bisping and Rivera that included bad blood and harsh trash talk from both fighters over the last few weeks, including Bisping spewing a homophobic slur toward Rivera at the weigh-in. After the fight Bisping and Rivera appeared to have some more harsh words for each other, as did their respective corner men. But they eventually exchanged a hug, and Bisping said he was sorry in his post-fight interview.

"I just want to apologize," Bisping said afterward. "He touched a nerve and I'm a sensitive guy."

Ring wins inexplicable UFC 127 decision over Fukuda

In an incredibly questionable -- to put it nicely -- judges decision, "The Ultimate Fighter" alumnus Nick Ring continued his unbeaten streak, winning a decision over Japanese fighter Riki Fukuda. All three judges saw it 29-28 for Ring.

Fukuda started the first round with a takedown. Ring tried to work an armbar from the bottom, but he couldn't finish it and kicked out from the bottom. When the two returned to their feet, Fukuda used kicks to batter Ring's legs and move inside to land strikes. Fukuda finished the round with a takedown.

In the second, Fukuda beat up Ring's face and managed another smooth takedown. He clinched with Ring, using knees and short punches to inflict damage. He wasn't overwhelming, but Fukuda definitely controlled the action.

Fukuda picked it up in the third round, coming out with quick strikes and then taking Ring down. They returned to their feet, and Fukuda landed undercuts and then got another takedown. Though he was clearly behind, Ring never went for broke in the final round. He looked beyond rusty in his first fight since appearing on the 11th season of TUF.

Ring looked slightly surprised as his name was read as the winner, and UFC commentator Je Rogan expressed shot by the judges call. Fight Metric had the fight 30-27 for Fukuda, as did Cagewriter. Even UFC president Dana White tweeted his displeasure, "Judges [expletive] suck again!! Fukuda got robbed!!!"

Kharitonov KOs Arlovski, moves to Strikeforce Grand Prix semis

Sergei Kharitonov earned the first semifinal berth in the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix, knocking out Andrei Arlovski at 2:49 in the first round of their bout in New Jersey on Saturday.

Arlovski, a crowd favorite, started strong with a flurry of strikes and kicks. He had good movement early, avoiding Kharitonov's strikes. But it turned bad for Arlovski when Kharitonov used the clinch to work inside, then landed a knee, an uppercut and knocked him to the the ground with a short right jab. Kharitonov finished the bout with a strike on the ground, knocking Arlovski out cold.

This is Arlovski's fourth loss in a row, with three of them first-round knockouts. He was once the UFC heavyweight champion, but now is in a precarious point in his career with a record of 15-9.

Kharitonov, who made his name in the Pride Fighting Championships, laughed off the suggestion that he is a darkhorse in this tournament.

"I don't care what the experts say. I'm going to win this tournament."

He will now face the winner of Josh Barnett and Brett Rogers. Those two will face off in April.

Bobby Lashley re-emerges on a Titans F.C. card in K.C.

Bobby Lashley seems to have disappeared after his first career loss, but now he's back. But it's not where you'd expect. Lashley isn't fighting for Strikeforce next month, he's on a card with the Titan Fighting Championship on Mar. 25 in Kansas City.

Lashley is fighting James Jack and Titan delivers the good news that the fight will air live on HDNet. It's the second Titan card that Mark Cuban's network will feature.

Lashley (5-1) climbs back into the cage for the first time since Aug. of 2010. He suffered a loss to Chad Griggs.

Lashley was controlling the fight with his wrestling, when he ran out of gas. Once Griggs started landing some punches, Lashley had a Brock Lesnar-like reaction. He didn't react well at all, to getting hit and turned away from the action.

This is a huge fight. Does Lashley want to be an elite fighter? Is he a guy who can beat the best in the world at heavyweight? We'll find out in this bounce back fight.

Former UFC fighter Phil Baroni is also making his comeback on this card against Nick Nolte (not that Nick Nolte).

UFC 127 Press Conference Video

The press conference in Australia will be particularly interesting because the media down under haven't completely accepted mixed martial arts: Don't be surprised if White, B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch face some questions about whether MMA is brutal, savage and unfit for polite society.

UFC 127 upset: Siver shocks lightweight title contender Sotiropoulos

The UFC has excellent depth in its lightweight division. Denis Siver proved that tonight.

George Sotiropoulos, on the verge of locking up a shot at the UFC lightweight title, rolled the dice by taking a fight in his homeland against the Russian fighting out of Germany. Sotiropoulos, an excellent jiu-jitsu practitioner, found it impossible to get the thick 5-foot-6 Siver to the ground. Meanwhile, Siver threw nasty kicks and punches for 15 minutes, even flooring Sotiropoulos in the middle of the first on his way to unanimous decision victory, 30-28, 30-27 and 29-28, at UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia.

Entering the fight, Siver (18-7) appeared to have so-so UFC record at 6-4, but he's improved massively since his early day with the promotion back in 2007. Tonight, was his crowning moment as he showed off solid takedown defense. In Siver's previous 10 fights, his opponents were 8-of-9 on takedown attempts. Sotiropoulos was 0-for-10. Siver has now won 7-of-8 overall.

Sotiropoulos (14-3, 7-1 UFC) came into the fight without a loss in the UFC. With 2010 wins over Joe Stevenson, Joe Lauzon and Kurt Pellegrino, he stormed into the top five of the UFC's lightweight ranking. After the Aussie beat Lauzon in late November at UFC 123, he insisted on being placed on this card just 13 weeks later. Siver turned out to be an awful matchup.

Sotiropoulos was a minus-330 favorite.

Suffolk Update.

If you planned on skating the new Suffolk park at Bennett's Creek this weekend, you might want to change your plans. According to the sign the park isn't opening until April 2nd. The flat concrete at Lake Meade was being worked on today, and according to the contractor, the concrete will be stable enough to skate on in three to four days but they are probably going to be doing landscaping so I'd expect an April 2nd opening date for that park as well.

Arum says MMA audience is still too white

Bob Arum irked mixed martial arts followers a few years back when he said the majority of fans were "skinhead white guys."

Even with MMA pay-per-view and arena audiences exploding across the U.S. and the world, Arum still believes MMA's scope is limited.

"It's the same audience over and over," Arum told USA Today. "It's white males, and they have never been able to expand their demographic."

For that reason, the UFC and MMA can only reach certain heights according to Arum.

"The Hispanics don't care anything for it. Most African-Americans don't watch it. Hey, this country is becoming more and more Hispanic, and it's growing African-American (in the) audience," Arum said.

"So the future success of UFC is limited. The success of boxing is not, because boxing reaches those groups. The only demographic that boxing has lost is the white, young males, period."

Arum believes the fight market includes all males and that MMA doesn't draw the eyes of Hispanics and African-Americans. He also hints at the fact that boxing may experience a resurgence if it can mend fences with network television and deliver more of its product for free.

We posted the latest fan video from Strikeforce. The audience at the Izod Center appeared to be pretty diverse.
