Trash talk is gone for humbled Hardy

Dan Hardy's a savvy guy. Heading into each one his fights, the British bomber usually provides us with some awesome promotional fodder. Not this time. Coming off a rough knockout loss against Carlos Condit and facing a guy he actually respects, Hardy refused to unleash his customary verbal warfare.

"I guess you could say I was humbled. I was more angered than humbled, though. I got annoyed at myself, I was like you wasted an opportunity there, you let a guy take it away from you and you never deserved it. And that was the talking I got for myself," Hardy said on the Ultimate Fight Night 24 conference call.

Hardy, a 28-year-old Brit who splits his training time between the U.K. and U.S., is slated to faced Anthony Johnson at Ultimate Fight Night 24 (Spike 10 p.m. ET/PT) in Seattle on Saturday.

Hardy (23-8, 4-2 UFC) fell victim to a nasty left hook from Carlos Condit, dropping his second straight fight in just 4:27. The mohawked-Brit was too relaxed heading into that fight at UFC 120.

"I was just little overly confident. That's all it was. I was, you know ? I let the moment get to me and let myself confidence get to me up. I didn't have any respect for the guy. I just kind of let myself open, not thinking that I'd pay the price," Hardy said. "That was all what it was really. It was a silly mistake and it was regrettable, but, you know, I wouldn't take it back because, you know, it's got me where I'm at right now. And I'm in a much better place now than I was then."

With two straight losses and one of the deepest divisions in all of MMA at 170 pounds, Hardy knows the heat is on.

"I've kind of put myself in a situation and mindset where I'm fighting for my job and, you know, that's the worst place that I could possibly be in for my opponent because they're going to get everything that I've got a little bit more," said Hardy.

Aside from not wanting to look like an out-of-touch blowhard coming off an bad knockout loss, Hardy didn't think Johnson was the right guy to try and rattle with a barrage of prefight trash talk.

"You know, one, myself and Anthony are friendly and we've always gotten along well. So there was no point in fabricating something because, you know, the fans just see through that kind of thing. So it was just, you know, I don't want to waste my energy doing that," Hardy said. "And the second thing is, you know, Anthony never bites to that kind of stuff. He's a pretty chilled guy. So, you know, I've just invested the energy into the training camp instead and, you know, I'll just do my talking on Saturday night."

Johnson (8-3, 5-3 UFC) is the perfect opponent for Hardy. He loves to stand and bang. The 26-year-old from Georgia is not a great wrestler and rarely looks for the takedown.

He's also coming off a 16-month layoff where he battled a ton of injuries. Johnson injured his knee three years ago and said he tried to fight through it, but kept doing more damage. He finally had it operated on last April. Johnson admits that he gained a ton of weight during the down time. He's been back in the gym since the summer, but how likely is it Johnson is at his best? This is a must-win fight for Hardy.

Streak of bad luck hits American Kickboxing Academy fighters

Someone must have broken a mirror while under a ladder as a black cat crossed their path at American Kickboxing Academy, the gym that trains Cain Velasquez, Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick, Josh Thomson and a slew of elite fighters. Two of their fighters had to withdraw from fights this week.

First, Jon Fitch pulled out of his planned rematch with B.J. Penn. The two were slated to fight at UFC 132 after they fought to a draw at UFC 127. No replacement has been named, but Penn is still expected to fight on the card.

Then, Mike Kyle was forced out of next week's Strikeforce bout with Gegard Mousasi with a broken hand. Strikeforce is looking for a replacement.

This is after Velasquez hurt his shoulder in training for a bout with Junior dos Santos, Koscheck broke an orbital bone against Georges St. Pierre, and Swick went through a laundry list of ailments that have kept him from fighting.

Since it's opening day for baseball, AKA fighters may want to think about pulling some ideas from "Major League" and "Bull Durham" to remove whatever curse that has befallen them. Sacrificing a live chicken might be a bit much -- especially for animal rights crusader Thomson -- but a bucket of KFC and chicken bones on their cage just may do the trick.

Jardine steps in at Strikeforce, Mousasi knows the pressure is on

Keith Jardine returns to the Zuffa family is a feel good story, but Gegard Mousasi knows he's going to be in a foul mood if he loses to the veteran. A loss would open up the floodgates for the critics.

Mousasi's been trying to erase the stigma of a one-sided loss to Muhammed Lawal and another loss, to Jardine, who was cut last year by the UFC, will put him out of the light heavyweight title picture for a long time.

"Not to disrespect Jardine, but say I would fight Jon Jones; if I would lose people still would say, 'Jon Jones is the God and he won and he's the pound-for-pound (best).' If I would lose to Keith Jardine people would say 'he's (Mousasi) overrated.' There's more to lose, that's what I mean. It's not like I don't have respect for Keith Jardine," Mousasi told Bleacher Report.

Jardine (15-9-1, 6-7 UFC) was called on Thursday night to fill in for the injured Mike Kyle. Kyle has an injured right hand and had to bail from the Strikeforce card in San Diego. It's the first major Strikeforce card under new management with Zuffa. Jardine was also a solid earner for the UFC, but had to be axed when he lost four straight. He's always talked about working his way back to the promotion. It sounds like he was sent out with the promise that he'd return if he got a couple of wins under his belt in the minors. Jardine lost his first time out of the gates against Trevor Prangley, but picked up wins in December and early March. When Zuffa called, he had to jump at the opportunity to take on a top 15 light heavyweight.

For Mousasi, it's a must-win situation.

"This kind of fight is where I have the most to lose because people expect me to win, especially since he's taking the fight on such short notice. This is the type of fight that I can't win a lot, because if I win they'll say that, 'well, you won over somebody that wasn't prepared,' and if I lose, it's (to) somebody that got kicked out of the UFC. It's a difficult situation and there's not much I can gain."

Mousasi (30-3-1) exploded onto the scene back in 2008 when he won the DREAM middleweight Grand Prix. He actually got a break with Jardine. Mousasi's takedown defense is still in question. At least he didn't get a guy who is going to look to get the fight to the ground.

Mayhem Miller Moves Past Nick Diaz Feud, Hopes to Face UFC Fighters Soon

Nearly a year since his last fight in Strikeforce, Jason "Mayhem" Miller still has no follow-up bout scheduled, though the popular middleweight hopes the recent Zuffa-Strikeforce deal has opened up to the possibilities of facing some UFC stars.

Miller is currently training as well as filming a role on Kevin James' upcoming MMA-themed film "Here Comes the Boom," but on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour, he said he's looking forward to getting back in the cage as soon as he gets an offer.

One of his hopes is that he gets a chance to fight against some of the sport's biggest names.

"I will beat the brakes off most of the guys in the middleweight divisions in the UFC," he said. "I guaran-damn-tee it."

Vinny Magalhaes Wins, M-1 Global Makes Its Showtime Debut

by Michael David SmithA former Ultimate Fighter contestant made short work of an overmatched opponent, and two M-1 champions were crowned, as M-1 had its first live event on Showtime Friday night.

The card was an important one for M-1, marking the first time the promotion got on premium cable without needing to put Fedor Emelianenko on the card and co-promote with Strikeforce, and for the most part the fights delivered: This wasn't the kind of high-quality MMA fans get with major UFC and Strikeforce shows, but the bouts were generally entertaining.

Vinny Magalhaes, known for making it to the final of Season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter, was by far the best-known fighter on the card. Magalhaes completely outclassed Jake Doerr, taking Doerr's back on the ground easily, sinking in a body triangle and landing punches until the referee stopped the fight, handing Magalhaes a first-round TKO victory.

Keith Jardine vs. Gegard Mousasi Set for Strikeforce April 9

Keith JardineKeith Jardine is returning to the big leagues of mixed martial arts, taking a tough fight on short notice against Gegard Mousasi on the April 9 Strikeforce event.

Jardine, who was once among the UFC's light heavyweight rising stars, was cut by that promotion last year when he lost his fourth straight fight. He then signed with Shark Fights and lost a fifth consecutive fight, and it appeared that his career had been derailed.

But Jardine stayed active and has won two straight fights on small-time MMA shows, and now he's jumping at a major opportunity to fight Mousasi.

Brock Lesnar Teaches Jimmy Fallon a Rear-Naked Choke

by Michael David SmithBrock LesnarFor the second straight week, a UFC fighter got a spot on NBC's late-night schedule, and for the second straight week it was a good PR moment for the UFC, which got to show off an engaging, likable fighter to an audience consisting largely of people who don't buy UFC pay-per-views.

Watch Junior dos Santos throw the ‘Showtime’ kick

Remember that kick Anthony Pettis threw against Ben Henderson that made us all go crazy? Now everyone is trying it, including UFC heavyweight contender Junior dos Santos.

It was impressive enough when Pettis did it, but this time, it was a heavyweight who weighed in at 240 lbs. in his last bout. Yet, he was nimble enough to run off a wall and kick Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who was holding the Muay Thai pad.

Think we'll see him pull it off against Brock Lesnar in June?

UFC 132: Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber 2

by Michael David SmithA bantamweight title fight between champion Dominick Cruz and top contender Urijah Faber will take place at UFC 132, July 2 in Las Vegas.

The UFC announced Saturday that Cruz vs. Faber is set for the fight card, which as the traditional Fourth of July weekend event is usually one of the biggest of the year for the UFC. The fight will likely be the main event, with a Jon Fitch-B.J. Penn rematch serving as the co-main event.

UFC Fight Night 24: Anthony Johnson Beats Dan Hardy

by Michael David SmithAnthony Johnson is back in the Octagon after an absence of more than a year, and he looks great.

Johnson, who had been sidelined since 2009 with a knee injury, stepped up and destroyed former No. 1 welterweight contender Dan Hardy Saturday at UFC Fight Night 24.

For Johnson, it was a big win that shows that when he's healthy and in shape, he's a force to be reckoned with at 170 pounds. For Hardy, the showed, a year after he lost his welterweight title fight to Georges St. Pierre, that he still doesn't have much in the way of takedown defense or ability to fight off his back. Any good wrestler is going to give Hardy problems until he shores up those weaknesses.

What you need to know from the TUF debut

"I ain't here to make friends. I ain't here to win new fans. This is strictly business for me."

The first words out of Brock Lesnar's mouth in the debut of the 13th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" were in form of the most cliche of reality TV cliches. This bodes well for the season. Read on for a recap and spoilers from the first episode of ... "The Ultimate Fighter."

Good news of the day: The fighters were pleased to find out that they did not have to win a fight to make it into the house, as was the custom in the past few seasons. What has returned is the wildcard. Less than two minutes into the show, Dana White drops his first f-bomb, saying that the UFC wants guys who are bleepin' fighters.

Instead of the fights, the fighters are put through workouts to show off their skills for Lesnar and Junior dos Santos. Lesnar has his strength and conditioning guru check on the cardio of each fighter, while dos Santos explores the "international language of fight." Dos Santos points out that he is more concerned about the fight style of each competitor, while Lesnar is more concerned about cardio.

Standouts of the day: Brock is most impressed with Len Bentley, while Shamar Bailey and Ryan McGillivray catch Junior's eye.

Ugh, that sucks of the day: Myles Jury, who also stood out, hurt his knee in practice. While he says it's fine, I've been watching this show long enough to realize that this is a bad sign.

Picks of the day: Lesnar and dos Santos head to the office to make their picks, meaning that it won't be like gym class, where each fighter will go and stand with their team. I hope it's more like cheerleading tryouts, where you read from a list that's posted outside the gym. Some cry with happiness, some cry with sadness.

Nah, Dana White just reads the fighters name from a list. Lesnar gets first pick by virtue of a coin toss. In order of how they were picked, the teams are:

Lesnar:
Len Bentley
Charles Rader
Tony Ferguson
Clay Harvison
Myles Jury
Chris Cope
Nordin Asrih

Dos Santos:
Shamar Bailey
Ryan McGillivray
Javier Torres
Ramsey Nijem
Zach Davis
Mick Bowman
Keon Caldwell

Second biggest reality TV show cliche of the day: Let's explore the house and claim rooms! The teams break up by floor, with Lesnar's team upstairs and Team dos Santos downstairs. Somehow, I still have faith that hijinx will ensue.

Saw that coming from a mile away of the day: Myles Jury has a torn ACL, and the doctor won't let him fight. Lesnar is surprisingly supportive. Jury thinks he's going to stay around and learn from the coaches while he heals. Dana White bursts that bubble and sends him home, to be replaced by Chuck O'Neil and his fantastic Boston accent.

Fight pick of the week: Dos Santos gets first fight pick, and he puts his first pick, Shemar Bailey, against Lesnar's last, Nordin Asrih.

Finding religion of the day: In an interesting oddity of matchmaking, both fighters are deeply religious. Bailey is a preacher's son, while Asrih is a German Muslim who adheres to his religion's pillar of praying five times daily. Asrih says that he feels more focused after prayer.

Fight of the Day: Nordin Asrih (Team Lesnar) vs. Shamar Bailey (Team dos Santos)

Round 1: Bailey quickly uses his strength, wrestling. He takes Asrih down and moves to side control. Asrih gets back to his feet for a second, but Bailey brings it right back down. Bailey's wrestling is fantastic, but he seems content to get the pin. It takes him much too long to figure out that it's OK. He can throw punches. Near the end of the round, he lands some big elbows, but for as long as he had control, Bailey should have done much more damage.

Round 2: Asrih starts the round with a kick, slips and falls on the ground. Bailey jumps on top of him, gets full mount and pins Asrih. However, this not being a wrestling match, no one slaps the mat and he has to continue fighting. Asrih shows some flashes when he reverses Bailey and tries for a guillotine. But the round was Bailey's. In the final minute, he gets full mount and throws strikes.

All three judges score it for Bailey, and he says after the fight that his strategy worked because he didn't want to show off everything that he could do in his first bout on the show. In his parting shot to his team, Lesnar says, "Wrestling is powerful in this sport."

Darn straight, Brock. What did you think of the first episode?

Strikeforce Challengers Preview and Predictions

Justin Wilcox kicks Shamar Bailey. The first Strikeforce event since the UFC bought the promotion takes place Friday night in Stockton, with a Challengers event that we've been told over and over again will be "business as usual" -- with the exception of elbows to the head on the ground being allowed.

Where it won't be business as usual, however, is that the guys in the Challengers shows now have more on the line than they did before: Impressive wins will likely result in Challengers fighters eventually moving on to the UFC. Video analysis: ‘Lil’ Nog’ hopes to restore reputation of former PRIDE fighters

Back around UFC 66, what ifs were the way of the world in MMA. With a star-filled roster, PRIDE was still thriving in Japan. Hardcore fans and devotees of Japanese fighting swore up and down that if PRIDE fighters ever got their hands on the stars of the UFC, it would be utter destruction.

Following the Dec. 30, 2006 event, Dana White announced the signing of PRIDE superstar Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic," Mitch Moss of ESPNRadio1100 became a hero to every PRIDE fan:

"Is there any fear or concern that by bringing everybody over that they might come over and completely dominate and crush these guys that you have signed up?"

Much of the gathered media laughed, yet many of them were thinking the same thing might happen. After the raucous laughter subsided, White said he wasn't worried because all those fighters would be his and they'd get a chance to compete under the UFC banner.

As it turned out, even Moss asked a great question, but the PRIDE fighters, who were added mostly in 2008 and 2009, far from dominated. It's actually been a tough run for most of them aside from Quinton Jackson and Anderson Silva. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, 34, is 2-1 with the UFC. This weekend at Ultimate Fight Night 24, he faces one of the new breed in 26-year-old former Penn State wrestler Phil Davis.

Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to talk about what's happened with the PRIDE fighters and "Lil Nog's" chances against Davis.

Hale Wins by Inverted Triangle, Bellator Light Heavyweights Advance

by Michael David Smith

In 2009, Toby Imada put Bellator Fighting Championships on the map by defeating Jorge Masvidal with an incredible inverted triangle choke submission, a highlight that became a viral video and was widely regarded as the best submission of the year in mixed martial arts.

Now lightning has struck twice for Bellator.

On Saturday night's Bellator card, Richard Hale used the same move -- the inverted triangle -- to choke Nik Fekete into unconsciousness. It was a sensational highlight, and exactly the kind of thing Bellator needs to attract attention on its new television home, MTV2.

Justin Wilcox Wins Strikeforce Challengers Main Event

by Michael David SmithJustin WilcoxJustin Wilcox put on a show at Saturday night's Strikeforce Challengers event in Stockton, California, dominating Rodrigo Damm for five minutes and opening up a cut over Damm's left eye that caused the fight to be stopped before the start of the second round.

It was Wilcox's fifth consecutive win in Strikeforce, and his most impressive yet. Wilcox benefited from Strikeforce legalizing elbows to the head on the ground in brutalizing Damm on the ground, and prior to that he chased Damm around the cage, as Damm didn't really look like he wanted any part of Wilcox.

Wilcox, who had Josh Koscheck in his corner, praised his camp afterward.

Boxing had some epic fights over the years at baseball stadiums.

Yankee Stadium was host to some classics all the way through the 70's and most recently, Yuri Foreman and Miguel Cotto scrapped in the New York outfield.

In 2010, MMA has started to take the lead in the fight game. Check around, a mixed martial arts events may be hitting a ballyard near you. We found three events scheduled in 2011 at minor league parks.

Former UFC fighter and "Ultimate Fighter" alum Edwin DeWees is headlining "Rumble at the Ranch" at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Az..

DeWees (36-14-1) beat Gideon Ray and lost to Patrick Cote on TUF 4. He was officially 0-2 in the UFC with losses to Rich Franklin and Chris Leben. He's also been in the cage with veterans like Joe Stevenson, Frank Trigg, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Jorge Rivera.

DeWees against Chuck Huus is the main event on an Apr. 23 card. DeWees, 28, has been a little inactive the last two years, but he did fight recently in Finland suffering a loss to Marcus Vanttinen on Mar. 12.

The Lexington Legends put a cage on the infield for "Bluegrass Bragging Rights" on May 15. The Lakewood (N.J.) Blueclaws are hosting "Fights Under the Lights" on June 23.

Five reasons to tune into ‘The Ultimate Fighter’

I'll admit it. Thirteen seasons into the UFC's reality show on Spike, and I'm feeling a little bit of "The Ultimate Fighter" fatigue. The show has been on since 2005, and it's hard to keep any TV show fresh for six years. (Except "Law and Order." How dare they take Jack McCoy off the air?)

But then I thought about the specifics of this season, and realizing that the fatigue I'm feeling can be easily squashed by the time the show debuts at 9 p.m. ET on Spike Wednesday night. Why should you tune in?

5. New start time: Just in time for the UFC to change the start time of the pay-per-view events, TUF is bumping its start time up an hour. The change may seem small, but now you'll have that much more time to return to Cagewriter and discuss the show before heading to bed.

4. A closer look at some of the best coaches in MMA: No, I'm not talking about Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos. Their assistant coaches are some of the best in the business, but relatively unknown by fight fans. Erik Paulson, Marty Morgan, Luiz Dorea and Billy Scheibe will all get a chance to show how they helped Lesnar and dos Santos reach elite levels of MMA.

3. Guest coach potential is off the charts: With dos Santos and Lesnar's connections and training partners, there is good reason to hope for fun cameos throughout the season. Jose Aldo, Anderson Silva, Pat Barry and the Nogueira brothers could all stop in. I really want Lesnar to pull in his buddies from the WWE days to teach his team about the fine art of selling a fight.

2. Watch dos Santos figure out how to be a star: Dos Santos has said that he just followed Lesnar's lead in dealing with the cameras. An interesting storyline throughout the season will be seeing if dos Santos is comfortable as not just a fighter, but a star in MMA.

1. Lesnar's response to a loss will be televised: With his out-of-the-way training camp and surly attitude, outsiders don't often get a close look at the former champ. When they do, it's quite often posturing. But with cameras following Lesnar for several weeks, it's likely they will capture his true response to losing his championship belt to Cain Velasquez. That will be riveting television.

Are you planning to tune in tonight? Tell us about it in the comments or on Facebook.

Overnight MMA hijinx: Lesnar chokes Fallon, Guida funnels beer

Brock Lesnar got a pop on Jimmy Fallon's show last night to promote Season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter. Fallon closed by having Brock "show him a move." The former UFC champ demonstrated a version of the rear-naked.

Next time a TV host or reporter asks to be manhandled someone needs to lock on that twister "The Korean Zombie" used on Saturday during his win over Leonard Garcia.

In other overnight news, UFC fighters drink beer and sometimes lots of it. Apparently, Clay Guida funneling some brew at Lake Havasu during an unnamed time recently is news, so TMZ posted this photo. Since the site is also following the awesome "Teen Mom" brawl from last week, we'll oblige.

Video analysis: Let’s all pump the brakes on Jon Jones

The hype train is rolling down the tracks for Jon Jones after he ransacked Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Don't dare step in front of it. If you suggest someone can give him a fight, you may get screamed at.

Jones is ultra-impressive, but he has a long way to go before he can be given an "era" or called an all-time great. Even Dana White cautioned fans to slow it down a bit.

"After what I saw tonight, it looks like he's like a mile ahead of everybody," White said, "But who knows, man. You never know in this sport."

White has seen young guys struggle in dealing with all the new responsibilities of being a superstar.

"His life is going to change in so many ways starting right now it's actually scary. When you get to this point, I worry about guys," White said.

"He's going to have to make a lot of choices over the next couple of years ? personally, professionally. He's in for a very wild, weird crazy ride right now. And he seems like a guy who's grounded enough and has the right people around him to handle it and go the right direction, but you never know."

Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to discuss "Bones" and what he'll be dealing with in and out of the cage.

Jones to appear on the ‘Tonight Show’ on Thursday night

Jon Jones' latest stop on the victory tour is a trip out to Los Angeles and Jay Leno's "Tonight Show." He will appear on the famous late night show on Thursday evening at 11:35 ET/PT to talk about winning the UFC light heavyweight belt. The split in his training camp with former friend and training partner Rashad Evans will likely be discussed.

Jones is far from the first fighter to make it onto Leno's stage. Tito Ortiz, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Chuck Liddell have all appeared on the Leno show. But even putting Jones in that company is impressive. All three men have multiple title defenses, movie roles and magazine covers. Now, Jones will join them down that road of stardom that transcends MMA.
