Who would've picked the 170-pounder out of Washington to post back-to-back wins over Thiago Alves and Nate Marquardt? He's already accomplished one half of the task and jumped at the opportunity to take on Marquardt, a former title contender at middleweight.
Story, who took the fight on just 24 days notice, likes his chances.
"I don't go into any fight thinking I'm not going to win. I go in knowing I'm going to win in every single fight," Story told ProMMARadio.
A former college wrestler at Southern Oregon, Story now looks to finish things with his hands.
"I want it to end by knockout. That's the ultimate," Story said. "I think it'll depend on how good of shape Marquardt is in after this weight cut. If he fades, I'm going to TKO him. Probably late 2nd or third round."
Story (13-3, 6-1 UFC) believes a spectacular win over a big name like Marquardt should get him a crack at the belt. That's big talk from a guy who actually lost his UFC debut a little over two years ago.
"I think that the win over Marquardt by finish should put me in position for a title shot. I think a lot of people would agree with me," Story said. "Finishing Marquardt, a former top contender at 185 pounds, a higher weight class, should move me into that spot."
That spot is inhabited by Georges St-Pierre, one of the world's top two fighters in MMA. That would be a heckuva leap for a guy who was recently ranked No. 23 in the world at 170. Seems unlikely, but so did this recent run of six straight wins. Story believes it can it happen, maybe it's time the rest do as well.

PITTSBURGH -- Like his beloved Red Sox on Sunday in Pittsburgh, Joe Lauzon was a big winner at UFC on Versus on Sunday night.
He showed off his striking abilities with a dominant display, knocking down Warburton with a straight right followed by a left. He then jumped on him top of him, and followed up with a perfect kimura to end the bout at 1:58 in the first round.
"We were working on not rushing things, keeping my balance and staying fundamentally sound. I hit pretty hard, but we had about five or six things we wanted to work in rotation. The first one I threw was the one that landed and put him away.� I'm always trying to hunt down submissions.� I never leave it to the judges," Lauzon said after the bout.
Attonito takes decision
Rich Attonito won a decision over Daniel Roberts in a bout that started strong but ended weakly. He won the bout with the odd judges' card of 29-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
Roberts started strong in the first round but slowed down considerably as the round wore on. At first he threw big, impressive kicks, but was taken down by Attonito by the end of the round. Roberts began with a takedown in the second and took Attonitio's back, but could not sink in a choke. Attonito reversed him and used the position to ground and pound, landing several big shots in the final seconds of the round.
Attonito grew aggressive in the third round, peppering Johnson with leg kicks and punches. The exhausted Roberts' only defense was to move away, but that was hardly effective. Attonito then knocked Roberts to the ground and followed up with an onslaught of punches. Roberts survived and got back to his feet, but was very wobbly. He staggered around the cage and threw strikes where he could while Attonito continued to throw intermittent strikes. Roberts tried for a takedown, but Attonito wanted to keep the fight on the ground. In the final seconds, Attonito took the fight to the ground, but was unable to do anything to put the bout in danger.

"I have had a lot of time to reflect on the fight, and while I have not seen it and due to the damage I incurred, I can't recall much of the fight. What I do know is this I am a guy learning how to fight at the elite level," Carwin wrote on his blog. "My heart can't be questioned, I think I showed that I have the cardio to fight at this level and I just need to work on my technique."
Carwin said he knew he was in trouble early in the fight.
"As the fight started, I just did not feel like myself," Carwin said. "I wasn't able to get my feet moving and Junior capitalized quickly. As he was pummeling me I kept trying to find a way to defend myself so [referee Herb Dean] would not stop the fight. Junior was landing solid shots and that is where probably he broke my nose."
Carwin did all he could to make it through the final round and take the fight to a decision.
"After the second round I knew I was in trouble. My nose made it impossible to breathe, my eyes were full of blood and Junior was still coming at me."

PITTSBURGH -- In the aftermath of the UFC on Versus 4 bouts, bonuses were given out and fighters talked about their nights.
-- $50,000 bonuses were awarded to Charles Oliveira and Nik Lentz for Fight of the Night, Joe Lauzon for Submission of the Night, and Knockout of the Night to Cheick Kongo.
-- Brenneman, who had his original fight with T.J. Grant canceled, then stepped in at the last minute for Nate Marquardt, called the week surreal. He also said that he made weight so that he could get his show money. The waiting on if he would fight or not was hard, but he stayed calm about it.
"What can I do but sit there and wait for it to happen and be a professional?"
-- Rick Story was put in an odd position as his opponent changed. "I was prepared to fight a kickboxer with jiu-jitsu, not a shorter attacking wrestler. He got the better of me this time."
-- The attendance for the event was 7,792, and UFC president Dana White said that the UFC's first trip into Pittsburgh, "Didn't suck."
-- Matt Mitrione worked at Xtreme Couture with kickboxer Ray Sefo before this bout, particularly on the combination he used to knock Christian Morecraft out. He said the moment was just right to use the combination.
"I thought, what the hell, I might as well try it."
-- In Pat Barry's loss to Cheick Kongo, he came close to finishing off the man who eventually beat him. It appeared that referee Dan Miragliotta was going to stop the fight. Barry said that he did, for a split-second, think that the bout was going to be stopped, but that didn't stop him from attacking Kongo.

Sam Stout turned heads on the undercard of UFC 131 with his highlight reel knockout of Yves Edwards. With that win under his belt, he is working on stopping bullying while also thinking about his next fight. He talked to Cagewriter about his win, his future and more.
When discussing his knockout, Stout said he didn't know that he scored such a jaw-dropper when he connected with Yves Edwards.
"The thing is with the big knockout shot, when you make that perfect connection, it's like when you hit a home run in baseball. It doesn't feel like it's big. It didn't hurt my hand. It's that perfect connection right on the button."
Though it would have been permissible for Stout to jump on top of Edwards to make sure the bout was over, he didn't. As soon as he saw that Edwards' eyes were rolled back in his head, Stout held back.
"For me, mixed martial arts is a sport. I'm not out there because I'm trying to hurt anyone. Especially Yves Edwards. He's a great competitor, great guy, class act. We have a lot of respect for each other. I didn't want to do anything to hurt the guy. "
Stout now has two wins in row in the UFC, and would like to continue facing tough opponents.
"I've been so focused on this fight with Yves Edwards that I haven't been looking after him, right now, I'm still soaking it in. Enjoying it. There's a huge list of guys to choose from. I know Donald Cerrone kind of called me out, not in a disrespectful way, but he's a great opponent. There's Anthony Pettis, and so many great fighters and great possible match-ups for me right now. I want to fight another top 10, top 15 guy and keep climbing my way up the rankings."
In the meantime, he's spending working with his trainer Shawn Tompkins and teammates Chris Horodecki and Mark Hominick on teaching children about the dangers of bullying.
"That's one of our major responsibilities as fighters, to let people know that it's not OK to fight in the street. It's not OK to pick on someone because you're bigger and stronger. It's an important message for us to portray to kids who might not be able to decipher the difference between a fight in a ring and fighting outside the sport."
It's a cause that many fighters feel strongly about. Dan Henderson visited a Chicago school last week to discuss bullying's problems. Ben Henderson and Daniel Cormier have done the same, and Jason "Mayhem" Miller's television show was built around people standing up to their bullies.
Though Stout says that he was never the victim of bullies, he saw how much they tormented others.
"I was never picked on, but it's something I knew was wrong. My parents always raised me to stick up for myself, and to stick up for people who couldn't stick up for themselves."
Now, Stout shares that message with the young students of the Tapout Training Center in Las Vegas.
"It's a message we really portray with the kids program. If any of them get into trouble, especially with violence at their schools, we encourage the parents to let us know. We sit down and talk with them, and if it's something that continues, we let them know that they won't be allowed to train. Most these kids are having a lot of fun with it, so it motivates them to be better people."
